I've experienced the same frustrations...
“No way, no way, no way!” I told my husband in response to him suggesting, for the 100th time, that we homeschool our kids. This had been a common argument for several months after my second child was born. I was far too busy working as a nurse to even think about such ideas. Yet, my husband persisted and eventually dragged me to my first ever homeschool conference.
You see, I loved school. I was a social butterfly and had lots of friends in my high school and college experiences. School had been some of the best times in my life, and I wasn’t going to take that away from my kids.
Admittedly, however, in conversations with my husband I slowly started to realize the flaws in the school system. When learning about my husband’s terrible experiences in school, I quickly realized that our current school system was not designed for everyone. Also, not everyone had the same awesome experiences that I had in school.
In deeper pondering of my own experiences, I realized that the only reason I did school was to socialize with my friends. I realized that all of my great memories in school were almost never in the classroom. I started to understand that I almost never remember studying anything that was useful. In fact, despite my good grades in college, I felt really stupid in most of my classes.
The problem was school made me feel powerless, stupid, and ignorant. It stripped me from ever wanting to homeschool because I felt inadequate and unqualified to teach my own children.
That homeschool conference made me realize how stupid I actually was, despite the fact I had a college degree. I began to feel anger because I trusted these institutions to make me feel smart, but it only made me feel more inadequate. I saw these amazing parents around me who didn’t have any college degrees teaching their kids things that I didn’t even know or learn about in school.
I knew that if I was going to be a successful mom, I was going to have to quit my job and become the mother that God had been preparing me to become. This small act of faith lead me to my ultimate teaching style that not only helps me with homeschooling my kids, but as a teacher, parent, and follower of Christ.
At first, I thought like any teacher would in the classroom. But that didn’t work at all. My kid didn’t know how to sit still or pay attention to a boring lecture.
Then I tried going off another homeschool mom’s curriculum and teaching style called classical education. It worked a lot better but still failed to help my children learn how to do other certain things.
Finally, it hit me: like it had been there all along, but I finally noticed it. When I tried it, guess what? This time it worked! My kids started to love to learn and got excited about the next subject. They started to come up with their own ideas and projects. It was like nothing I had ever seen.
I had to ponder on why I never found this simple solution before. But I realized it wasn’t my fault, it was because God had been taken out of school completely and no one was teaching how Christ taught. No wonder I was struggling!
For years, school had been teaching me that I needed to think in a secular way and that school and the gospel needed to be separated. Even some Christian curriculums only sprinkled God's word rather than learning from His word. When I figured that it was all a lie, I was finally able to break out of their chains and get the results my children (and I) deserved.
The real problem is that I was forced into think that God and morals were no longer needed in school: that church and school needed to be separated. They were the ones keeping me from teaching my children the right way.
Once I realized that God and His teaching style needed to be incorporated into our children’s learning experience, that’s when I started to make great progress with my children’s learning.
I didn’t realize when I started this journey of teaching with Christ that it not only helped my children become excited to learn, it kept them from wanting to rebel. They became better, more behaved kids.
