The Smell of Thy Nose

In today’s temple, we manipulate light to show progression, in the ancient Biblical Tabernacle they used smell to show a change in atmosphere and progression.

The desert was bright, hot, windy and dirty. Inside the Holy room was cool, clean, dark, with soft carpet and filled with sweet smells.

All five senses were appealed to:

  • Smell – incense, bread, wine
  • Taste – bread and wine
  • Sight – light, smoke (cloud), beauty
  • Feel – carpet, smoke, shade, spirit
  • Hear – quiet, pleasant

Be of Good Cheer Before My Face

In the Hebrew language they use the plural for face (faces) as indicated by the suffix ים  iym.

Most words in the Hebrew language expresses the idea of motion or denote objects of action. The action behind paniym is the expression of emotion and thoughts in the face, and since we have an infinite number of thoughts and emotions the Hebrew word is plural.

This Hebrew word more precisely means the “presence” or the “wholeness” of an individual who is ONE with God.

Can others see the presence of God when they look into your face?

Out of the Heart the Mouth Speaketh

There is an Eastern African story that tells of a chief with sad children and a poor man with happy children. The Chief asked the poor man what made his children so happy and he answered, “I feed my children with the meat of the tongue, and this fills them with health and happiness.” The Chief fed his children tongue and it did not work so he traded his children with the poor man’s. Soon his children became happy and the poor man’s children became sad. So the Chief returned for more advice.

The chief listened, and suddenly he understood. “The meat of the tongue, you are a wise man, indeed,” he said, “for you know the greatest gift a parent can offer his children is his companionship, and his wisdom, and his words. You have taught me well.”

He returned home with his children and spent time with them in telling them stories and singing them songs.

When you use your mouth for the building and inspiring of your children you teach them about who they are and their purpose in the world.

Remember – Our Mouths expose the desires and intentions of our hearts.

How did you use your mouth today?

Enlightening the Eyes

Remember the myth about the cyclopes, the giant with one eye, in the Epic, The Odyssey? As I’ve pondered the idea of one eye I’m reminded of two ideas when we focus our eyes on one thing.

  1. Our focus could be on the things of the world and mortality and our ego becomes a giant that takes over our lives.
  2. Our focus could be on the things of heaven and eternity. OUr eyes can be single to the glory of God and our spirits become giants leading our lives to happiness.

Where is your focus?

The EYE is a Symbol of a Person’s Ability to: (see Bible Dictionary)

  • Receive the light of God: “open our eyes to the hope of God’s light” Dieter F. Uchdorft
  • Show their spiritual condition Alma invited the members of the church in Gideon to evaluate their spiritual condition (see Alma 5)
  • Receive Light and Truth:  The light is through him who enlightened your eyes (D&C 88:11)
  • Understand the things of God:  The eyes of your understanding will be enlightened (Eph. 1:17-18)
  • See as Christ sees:  none can have power …except with an eye single to God’s glory (Mormon 8:15)
  • Be filled with Light: If your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light (D&C 88:67)

Eyes show our spiritual condition and how we understand the things of God.

Incline Thine Ear Unto Wisdom

Christ healed a deaf man by putting His finger into his ears, and said, “Ephphatha” which means “Be opened.” And straightway his ears were opened (Mark 7:32-35). How has Christ opened your ears?

The word “incline” in the Proverb, “Incline Thine Ear Unto Wisdom” in Latin is broken up as “in” meaning toward and “clinare” meaning bend or to bend toward. This proverb is saying Bend Your Ear Toward Wisdom, the highest level of learning. Why the ear?

The ear is one of the organs that comes in pairs, it brings sound into our minds and can never be shut off. Christ asks everyone that has ears (all of us) “let him hear” or “Listen to Me” or “Harken Unto My Word.” This is like the simple invitation of “Come Follow Me.” Christ invites us in many different ways to become like him. He is showing us the better way. Symbolically the ear represents obedience – to listen, to harken and to obey the word of God.

What are you bending your ear toward?

You Are My Hands

There is a statue of Christ where the hands were destroyed during the war and they were left off and a description added beneath the statue which read, “You Are My Hands.” How do you demonstrate you are Christ’s hands?

Often the scriptures say that we are instruments in the hands of Christ. There are two types of instruments. Tools to be worked and musical instruments to be played. Tools need to be sharp and charged to be effective. Musical Instruments do not get to chose what they play, where they will be played or how or when they will be played. How do you keep yourself sharped, charged and ready to be used by Christ?
